This includes the curve and diameter of your cornea, the size of your pupils, and sometimes the white part of your eye (sclera) to determine how the lens will sit. Pupil size is important in specific situations. For example, people with large pupils may notice halos or glare when driving at night if the lens’s optical zone is too small. Pupil size also affects the fit of multifocal lenses, which provide clear vision at multiple distances. The tear film is checked to ensure your eyes stay comfortably moist. Trial lenses allow you to test both clarity and comfort before a final prescription is written.

First-time wearers receive hands-on training, learning how to insert and remove lenses safely and how to clean and store them properly.

The fitting also helps determine the best type of contact lenses for your needs. Options include daily disposables for convenience or weekly and monthly lenses for cost-effectiveness, as well as specialty lenses like toric lenses for astigmatism or multifocal lenses for presbyopia.

Because this process involves extra testing, time, and expertise beyond a standard eye exam, it is usually billed separately. The goal is to ensure your contacts are safe, effective, and tailored specifically to your eyes. For some patients - especially those with irregular corneas, keratoconus, or chronic dry eyes - ordinary contact lenses don’t provide clear or comfortable vision. In those cases, scleral lenses and hybrid lenses can be life-changing options.

Scleral lenses are large, dome-shaped contact lenses made entirely from rigid, oxygen-permeable material. Unlike regular lenses that rest on the cornea, scleral lenses don’t touch the cornea and rest on the white part of the eye, called the sclera. This design creates a thin pocket of fluid between the lens and the cornea, keeping the surface of the eye constantly hydrated and smooth. Because they don’t touch the sensitive cornea, scleral lenses provide excellent comfort and sharp vision for irregular or damaged corneas. Some manufacturers even design scleral lenses with a soft peripheral skirt (making them a type of hybrid lens), combining a rigid center with a softer outer edge for added comfort.

Hybrid lenses combine the best features of both hard and soft lenses. They have a rigid center, which provides the clear vision of a gas-permeable lens, and a soft outer skirt, which increases comfort and helps the lens center itself more easily. Hybrid lenses are often used for people with mild to moderate corneal irregularities or those who need sharper vision than soft lenses can provide but prefer something more comfortable than a rigid lens.

Fitting either type of lens requires special training and equipment. Not every optometrist provides these services. The fitting process involves taking detailed measurements of the eye’s surface, trying diagnostic lenses, and fine-tuning the design to achieve an exact fit. Several follow-up visits are usually needed to ensure long-term comfort and eye health.

While scleral and hybrid lenses may cost more than standard contacts, they offer unique benefits - sharper vision, increased comfort, and improved protection for sensitive eyes. For patients with complex vision needs, these advanced lenses can restore clear, comfortable sight when other options have failed.
