TearGlyde® is a registered trademark of Alcon originally filed in 2005. TearGlyde® describes Alcon's proprietary dual-disinfection system which reconditions contact lenses and supports moisture retention. TearGlyde is made up of Polyquaternium-1 (POLYQUAD®) and Myristamidopropyl dimethylamine (ALDOX®), which are both disinfecting ingredients developed by Alcon. Besides these two disinfectants, TETRONIC® 1304, a non-ionic sufactant, is used as a wetting agent.

Key ingredients of TearGlyde

Polyquaternium-1, commonly known by its trade name POLYQUAD®, is an effective disinfecting agent. It belongs to a class of compounds called polymeric quaternary ammonium salts. Polyquaternium-1 possesses good antimicrobial properties, making it highly efficient in eliminating various types of bacteria and fungi, that can accumulate on contact lenses during wear. While it is not without controversy2 when used in cleaning solutions for various silicone hydrogel contact lenses, Polyquaternium-1 may support reducing the risk of eye infections due to its anti-bacterial properties.

Myristamidopropyl dimethylamine, known as ALDOX®, is another disinfecting ingredient that is part of the TearGlyde system. ALDOX® is a derivative of the naturally occurring fatty acid, myristic acid. It demonstrates great antimicrobial properties against a wide range of microorganisms commonly found on contact lenses. ALDOX® acts synergistically with Polyquaternium-1 to provide an enhanced disinfecting effect, further increasing the effectiveness of TearGlyde® in combating potentially harmful microorganisms.

In addition to the disinfecting agents, TearGlyde® incorporates TETRONIC® 1304 as a wetting agent. TETRONIC® 1304 is a nonionic surfactant (developed by BASF) that aids in maintaining the moisture balance on the contact lens surface. It forms a hydrophilic (water-loving) layer, which helps improve the wettability of the lens and enhances its ability to retain moisture. This hydrophilic 'coating' contributes to increased comfort during contact lens wear.

By combining the disinfecting properties of Polyquaternium-1 and ALDOX®, along with the moisture-retaining capabilities of TETRONIC® 1304, TearGlyde® provides a comprehensive lens cleaning solution for contact lens wearers. The dual-disinfection system helps in the fight against harmful microorganisms while the wetting agent enhances the lens surface properties.
